Stirling and the surrounding area is home to a number of locations for the filming of this popular series. Stirling University was used for its scenic beauty with its stunning loch side setting and inspiring views over the Ochil Hills in the background.  Airthrey Castle which is situated in the grounds of the University which at one time was Airthrey estate, was also used during filming.

Magnificant Falkland, Culross, Drummond Gardens and Blackness castle also feature in the series. While Doune Castle was used for the exterior shots of the fictional “Castle Leoch” in the series which is set during the Jacobite rebellion. Moulds of the castles architecture were taken so that sets could be made in the studio for the interior scenes. In the series the Castle is the seat of Clan McKenzie. Doune Castle has also been used in a number of other film and television ventures, including Outlaw King, Monty Python’s Holy Grail and Game of Thrones.
